On HoloLens 2, I worked as a Program Manager II.

What is the HoloLens 2?

HoloLens 2 is a combination waveguide and laser-based stereoscopic & full-color mixed reality smartglass augmented reality headset that is developed and manufactured by Microsoft, and acts as a successor to the original Microsoft HoloLens. The HoloLens 2 released in 2019 with enterprise and developer variants of the device and has gone on to act as the core technology empowering bespoke spatial computing industry solutions for some of the top institutions in the world, such as the construction-focused XR10 model built in partnership with Trimble or the defense-focused I.V.A.S. model built in partnership with the US Army.

My work as Program Manager II on HoloLens 2

  • Directly managed inter-team operations supporting iterative feature and platform updates, manifested through a reliable monthly release servicing pipeline and update delivery system.

  • Improved cross-team reporting and team alignment procedures to better inform leadership and wider network of stakeholders about various in-market product statuses (I.e., active user metrics, KPI tracking, engineering and codeflow reporting, test and quality verification reporting, social media insights, etc.)

  • Facilitated communication between customer advocacy teams and engineering teams to produce meaningful and requested changes to the HoloLens 2 platform that had a impact on improving lifetime device activations.

  • Assisted with confidential special projects geared toward defining the vision for HoloLens moving forward.

Challenges as Program Manager II on HoloLens 2

The core challenges I encountered during my time driving in-market support of the HoloLens 2 came down to two different areas: focusing the wider engineering team on the deliverables that would generate the highest impact for the customers using the device, and retrofitting our reporting structures to provide Microsoft Mixed Reality leadership and other stakeholders with a clearer picture regarding what usage metrics, KPIs, and other aspects of inter-team information sharing would best inform the formulation of the most impactful market strategy for maximizing HoloLens 2’s impact in-market.
