HP Reverb G2

On the HP Reverb G2, I worked as a Program Manager II.

What is the HP Reverb G2?

The HP Reverb G2 is a virtual reality headset that was built in partnership between HP, Valve, and Microsoft, and was released to market in the Fall of 2020. Acting as a follow-up to the original HP Reverb, the updated HP Reverb G2 was designed to deliver a more immersive, comfortable, and compatible experience than its predecessor. An upgraded enterprise-focused variant of the device was released under the ‘Omnicept Edition‘ name, while the base model of the device received a soft update in the Fall of 2021 to address issues customers found on the original version. The HP Reverb G2, specifically the ‘Omnicept Edition‘, won several awards after hitting the market, including ‘VR Hardware of the Year‘ at the 2021 VR Awards, as well as being recognized as a ‘Lumiere Awards Honoree‘ by The Advanced Imaging Society in 2022.

My work as Program Manager II on HP Reverb G2

  • Oversaw updates to QA testing infrastructure and processes at Microsoft Mixed Reality to support the introduction of the HP Reverb G2 device line into the wider Windows Mixed Reality supported device matrix.

  • Provided direct support to partners at HP and Valve, fostering a reliable feedback loop among collaborators both inside and outside of Microsoft that enabled interdependent engineering teams to rapidly test and iterate based on meaningful feedback shared amongst partner stakeholders.

  • Directly supported in-market customers and external development teams on understanding and using the HP Reverb G2 device line, spanning a diverse variety of user needs that frequently alternated between focuses on content developers, enterprise customers, and retail customers.

Challenges as Program Manager II on HP Reverb G2

Working on the HP Reverb G2 was a uniquely challenging time, as development on the device was interrupted by the Coronavirus pandemic in the middle of 2020 which forced our respective teams across HP, Valve, and Microsoft to work as a distributed group for the first time. Despite these challenges, our teams rallied together to produce an award-winning headset that was especially well-received by VR gamers and simmers. In addition, this project represented the first end-to-end VR device development cycle I had personally experienced, which ended up being an experience that was littered with new opportunities from start to finish to learn and grow as an industry professional working on cutting-edge spatial computing technologies.
